Getting real with your business idea. ABN or not to ABN

I’ve had many people ask me about starting their own business. My first response is “why would you want to do a crazy think like that?”. I’ve been a small business owner, on and off, for over fifteen years and it’s no walk in the park. But here I am, owning my third business. My first business was a lawn mowing business. I was in my mid twenties, working full time as a labourer with a young family, and we needed more money, so I wrote up a one page add “lawns mowed”, scribble my number on it and stuck it in the window of the local corner store. Well the phone didn’t ring hot and that shop has been long closed.

My second business was a training consultant. But this time, it was a bit different. I had the qualifications, the skills, the networks and I had an Australian Business Number “ABN”.

Having the ABN was a game changer. It was a simple process and immediate. I logged onto the Australian Government website, filled out my details and Voilà!, I had an ABN. Now the thing about having an ABN is that I could invoice clients and get paid – wow, what a great concept! So off I went, training my little heart out and I did this for a few years. But like a majority of small businesses it didn’t last long, so I had to go and get a real job. But I had learnt some important lessons, lessons that would serve me well with my future as a business owner.

If you’re serious about starting a business, think seriously about getting an ABN. The Australian Business Register website https://abr.gov.au has all the info you need. Also, there are many commercial business registration services on-line that can register your ABN for you. It was a great feeling having an ABN. For me having an ABN was a conscious commitment that I had made to my business and showed the world that I was serious about my business.
